St. Joseph College, Gregory Terrace, a prestigious Catholic college for young men, has always considered sports a fundamental part of learning and an important element in the formation of the Terrace Gentlemen. In 2022, the sports facilities were flooded by heavy rains, rendering the audio-visual infrastructure virtually unusable. The school seized this challenge as an opportunity to renovate its AV system to meet current and future needs. The administration contacted Ashburner Francis Consulting Engineers to design and develop, not only a new world-class public address system for the entire sports complex, but also to advise on how to redesign the audio-visual recording and broadcasting system for the school's main sports field and surrounding buildings.... rather than simply replacing what was there before!
After winning the tender, VIDEOPRO (the system integrator), working closely with the client, consultant and relevant manufacturers, implemented a complex, state-of-the-art audiovisual solution that supports the impeccable reputation of St Joseph's College. The new AV infrastructure was designed to provide video transmission and recording based on low latency transport of 4K@60Hz video over optical fiber on a 10 Gb network. It had to be robust, reliable, small footprint and easy to use.
VIDEOPRO, with its recognized track record in the pursuit of quality offered by the world's leading brands, strategically implemented Lightware's UBEX 10Gb AV over IP transmission solution to obtain 4K video signals from professional cameras on the sports field, connect them to fiber optic points around the field and transport them without latency to the stadium's AV bunker to send them to the stadium's LED screen and transmit them live.
VIDEOPRO, in particular, used 3 units of the UBEX-Pro20-HDMI-F110 optical extender, which enables the extension of uncompressed 4K UHD@60Hz 4:4:4:4 uncompressed signals with latency-free multi-transmission. The UBEX devices function as portable transmitters for 3 field cameras, allowing 4K video to be connected to fiber-optic AV-over-IP points around the field. Once delivered to the AV bunker network switching devices, the 4K video is received by 3 UBEX-Pro20-HDMI-F110 devices that function as receivers supporting HDR video and high bit rate audio standards. The UBEX units, installed in the bunker rack, require minimal connections and are easy to operate for both the in-house AV team and external professional operators who use the St Joseph's AV system to broadcast live large rugby and cricket matches.
Lightware's UBEX-MMU-X200 matrix management unit controls and monitors the virtual matrix that functions as a crossover point for the UBEX TX/RX units in the system.
UBEX technology allows for scalability and asymmetrical construction of the solution, so if the university needs more inputs or outputs in the future, it can easily meet its needs by leveraging Lightware's UBEX 10 Gb AV-over-IP extenders, which can be easily added as needed and grow with changes in demand.
The design also includes multiple DA2HDMI-4K-Plus distribution amplifiers to provide duplicate outputs when necessary.
Roger's Pavilion, located next to the sports area, is a multi-purpose room where students and coaches gather to work, discuss and analyze games, but there may also be a need to send content from here to the outdoor LED screen, to other buildings and to facilitate video conferencing. So for this space, the client needed a meeting room with a user-friendly design and UC functionality, as well as the ability to control certain elements of the entire AV system. To enable seamless collaboration, VIDEOPRO used Lightware's USB-C-powered TAURUS UCX-4x2-HC30D matrix switcher, which enables 4K60 video between laptops and displays, a USB 3.1 switching layer for hosts and peripherals, 60W charging, and DANTE audio capabilities as the core of the system.
In addition, the UBEX-Pro20-HDMI-F100 extender that functions as a transmitter/receiver allows Roger's Pavilion technology to be connected to the main rack switcher, meaning that content from here can be used anywhere the 10 Gb distribution system reaches.
VIDEOPRO's Account Manager for the St. Joseph's College project, Mark Chaplin, says UBEX was unrivaled as the right tool for the difficult job of extending latency-free, uncompressed 4K UHD video of the highest quality over long distances over a 10 Gb network.
St. Joseph's College, which excels in fostering values in young people, has applied the same responsible and thorough approach to the renovation of its audiovisual technology. The Lightware team was excited to contribute to the creation of a state-of-the-art audiovisual solution for the college's athletic fields.
